Barrel Monster Faces Prison

brought to you by Home School Email

NC student Joseph Carnevale aka "Banksy" is being charged with larceny for stealing and damaging the traffic barrels on May 31 for the purpose of building a statue. Banksy assembled a barrel monster out of bright orange traffic barrels and put it to work directing traffic on a busy public street.

Read more here.

From Banksy's blog: "I couldn’t get it out of my head. Its that itch, that need to make real an idea that has rolled around in one’s head for days, snowballed itself into a temporary obsession that just has to be satisfied.

I arrived in a flash and snatched them up from where they stood on the street. As I threw them into the trunk of the vehicle I had to rough them up some so they would fit. I shoved and beat and mangled them into place and was off before any witnesses knew what had even happened.

Later on that night, they stood huddled in the corner of the room, silent. They looked on while I slowly set out the duct tape and plugged in the power drill. Then I pulled out the switchblade and released the cold metal blade. They would never be the same."

  • COMBAT PAPER PROJECT

Through papermaking workshops veterans use their uniforms worn in combat to create cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beat and formed into sheets of paper. Veterans use the transformative process of papermaking to reclaim their uniform as art and begin to embrace their experiences as a soldier in war.

The goal is to utilize art as a means to help veterans reconcile their personal experiences as well as broaden the traditional narrative surrounding service, honor and the military culture.

There is an interesting piece in the NYTimes Magazine about a particular scientific study of social networks, modeled using gobs of handwritten data from research begun in 1948 by the National Heart Institute which "followed more than 15,000 Framingham (Massachusetts) residents and their descendants, bringing them in to a doctor’s office every four years, on average, for a comprehensive physical."

The report of the study is that we are affected by people we may not even know, through 2nd and 3rd string connections. To wit: if a friend of a friend is happy, your happiness is heightened to some degree. If a friend of theirs gains weight, you incur a residual likelihood of same.

And she's so resource-efficient! 14+ painters, one census form. Dissociative Identity Disorder has redefined the art commune.

Every one of the alters in Kim's body ("Kim", she says, is just the name that the collective gives to its vehicle; there is no "Kim" in Kim) does different styles to the work they make. A couple are color-&-form abstractists, one trucks exclusively in occult symbols, one restricts herself to rather disturbing renderings of seemingly ritual abuse. Judy, the 15-year-old, seems to enjoy duality. There are even anonymous artists in Kim, distinct from the thematic alters, who pop up from time to time.

Please enjoy the fruits of a fractured mind here, and maybe try an appropriately/oddly disembodied virtual tour, if you'd rather a video. Bear in mind the poignancy of calling the work of internal personalities "outsider art."

    gawrsh

Who even knew for a second that the jokey once-monk icon of paleo-liberal thought would spawn legions of pasty palefaces in Ozzy costumes who think they kill angels by growling, like this guy. Is there any hint out there in the goth bookworm libraries that entire covens of black magicians are unfairly screwtaping this ancient jigglebilly's giddy fantasy of a godless heaven?

    a Thelemite lady

Who woulda thunk that the uppity facebeard of Fontenay-le-Comte would one day have his humanist fantasies reimagined into fashion cues for multiple spicy myspacers in both hemispheres. My Gargantua wouldn't mind getting into her Pantagruel, if you feel me, if you know what I mean by that.

No telling whether it's better to bear in mind or forget that The Beast 666 was a bit of involved with the following true story, nicked from a public Facebook note (links added for context):

As first-time parents we have struggled with how to best cultivate participation in living Thelema in our daughter. Already we do Will to all meals and celebrate as a family the Thelemic Calendar. She just had her first sacrament and attends the regular Gnostic Masses in addition to the celebratory ones that she previously attended. She is loving it and wants to do more.

Recently she has been tried to participate in Sunset Resh since she is always around when we do that and we have not discouraged her this and taught her how to do it. It is however largely impractical for a child of eight years old to do the fourfold adorations, since she attends school during the Noon Resh. I think the fourfold adorations are more proper to incorporate after one has celebrated ones Feast of Water and Fire.

Today I chanced upon a variation of this and decided to teach her a sort of Thelemic evening prayer for Children, that is a simplified invocation of Horus before one goes to sleep. After explaining to her the meaning of each sentence (which was rather easy since she has a general conception of Khabs, Ka, Khu etc.) I taught her the following evening prayer whch she really enjoyed and was enthusiastic about. It has the benefit of teaching them in a very direct and ritual way aspects of the Thelemic cosmogony as well as memorizing parts of the Book of the Law.

The rest of the note--and the prayer itself, which includes the basic instruction to "assume the godform of Sa and change to Dua . . . while visualising the different aspects of Ra, Khu, Ka and Khabs"--here. This concludes today's item on the subject of religious tolerance. Here's another picture of the girl.

  • Dr. Beetroot Manto Tshabalala-Msimang Is Dead

An echelon official in the South African political bureaucracy and an HIV/AIDS denier, Tshabalala-Msimang passed away Wednesday when her liver failed. She was 69.

    De wiki:

A case that attracted much public attention was Nozipho Bhengu, daughter of an African National Congress legislator, who rejected anti-retroviral treatments for AIDS in favor of Tshabalala-Msimang's garlic and lemon diet. The minister declined to attend her funeral, and her stand-in was booed off the podium.

See, they called her Dr. Beetroot because she recommended a healthy diet and a tincture of local extracts as a treatment for HIV. It seemed to function all right as a palliative (Ms. Bhengu showed all the signs of health before dying, as the Economist will tell you), but didn't do much to actually treat the disease. There's sort of a lot of misunderstanding about HI-5 on the Mother Continent.

Case & point: current SA president and arraigned rapist Jacob Zuma testified that he took a shower, following the alleged incident, to limit his risk of HIV. He usually uses condoms, he said, but did not have one at the time. It is rumored among joke-ass suckers that Zuma's AIDS shower was actually intended to prevent that thing you get when your balls stick to yr legs or yr jimmy gets all glued to the nut pouch in yr boxer-briefs, which is honestly no laughing matter. Maybe let's get the Bill & Mel Gates Charity Foundry in touch with these folks. Free condoms in spaza shops!

Here's Manto's obit piece in Times LIVE, wherein many of her critics are reported as forgiving her. Right nice of them, really.
